Research constitutes a core pillar of the mission and educational philosophy of the American University of the Middle East (AUM). The University places strong emphasis on promoting and supporting research and publication activities across its strategic research directions, which encompass multiple themes and fields related to environmental sustainability.
As illustrated in the figures below, AUM’s research contributions demonstrate a progressively stronger alignment with the University’s defined research themes. These themes have been developed to reflect national priorities while also leveraging AUM’s research ecosystem, academic offerings, and faculty expertise.
Note: A detailed report on Environmental Research is provided separately.
AUM’s research productivity demonstrates a sustained commitment to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Over the four-year period 2022–2025, AUM’s research output shows a strong alignment with key sustainability priorities.
Compared to the global share of publications per SDG, AUM exhibits a higher concentration of research activity in selected areas, as evidenced by the Relative Activity Index (RAI) derived from SciVal. This indicates a strategic emphasis on domains where the institution contributes above the global average.
Most Significant Contributions
AUM’s research impact is particularly notable in the following SDGs:
SDG 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy: 415 publications
SDG 9 - Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure: 277 publications
SDG 13 - Climate Action: 158 publications
SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production: 145 publications
These figures highlight AUM’s focused contribution to environmental sustainability, particularly in areas related to energy, climate, sustainable production, and innovation-driven infrastructure.
